The organisation Positive Life Kenya (PLK) is an NGO based in Nairobi that was started in 2010 by Mary Wabwire. Together with 6 enthusiasts, she runs two schools and a women's shelter in Nairobi.
Since the beginning of 2025, SAS YOU ASSIST (SYA) has been sponsoring the expansion of the small school Tumaini, which is located in the middle of the Mlolongo slum in Nairobi. After the New Year, the school has had to accept many new students after a fire in the Kiotani boarding school. The children living in the Mlolongo slum need to gradually find space in Tumaini instead. In 2024 the school had room for 110 children, but now the plan is to accept an additional 70 children by the end of 2025. They therefore need to build two more classrooms. SYA has contributed to the construction of the frame for one of the classrooms. In the last picture you can see how the new walls have been erected above the dining room.
Kiotani Boarding School in Lukenya, an hour outside Nairobi, was sponsored by SYA between 2018 and 2024. The school was started so that children from the Mlolongo slum in Nairobi could escape the dangers of the slum and receive good food and education in a peaceful environment. In the autumn of 2024, the school was devastated by a serious fire. The building, which contained dormitories for 60 girls, burned to the ground and only through good fortunate that no one was injured.
In connection with this, it was decided that it was no longer safe to have young children at the school, and to change the focus to providing young people over the age of 18 with vocational training. The authorities in Kenya have also introduced regulations that young children should no longer attend boarding schools, but should instead receive education and support in their home environment.
