U-ASSIST BACOLOD,

NEGROS, PHILIPPINES

The purpose of U-assist Bacolod's activity is to give poor, disabled children the opportunity for education and development. The children attend a special class at the school in Kabankalan. Help is given in the form of financial support for travel and school materials.

In addition to direct help, the aim is also to highlight this group of children, who otherwise lead a hidden life, isolated from their families to avoid harassment from the outside world. Furthermore, we seek to increase people's understanding that these children should have the same rights and opportunities as other children.

Negros is an island in Visayan, in central Philippines. It is the country's third-largest island and has a population of 3.7 million. The largest city is Bacolod. The island produces mainly sugar, but also rice and cocoa.

The organisation U-assist, Bacolod was founded 30 years ago by Lars Ekblom, who was then living on Negros. SAS YOU ASSIST has been supporting the project for 15 years. Our current contacts there are Kristina and Klas Eliasson, who settled on Negros after retirement. Kristina was born and raised there. They have spent at least one month per year on the island over the years. During that time, they meet with the children to distribute money and monitor their progress. If the child has not participated in the lessons, they receive no more support.
