FASAL LIBRARY PROJECT, KENYA
The Foundation for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (FASAL Kenya) is a local non-governmental organisation that has been in existence for the past ten (10) years. Its mission has been to facilitate communities by promoting and empowering arid and semi-arid communities in their needs for access to education, health and household hygiene, environmental protection and governance. The organisation has been successful in impacting and transforming the lives of many vulnerable communities in the Central District of Marsabit County. In 2021 and 2022 the area was hit by a severe and dangerous drought that affected the livelihoods of communities in Marsabit County where FASAL operates.
In 2019, the organisation partnered with two other institutions and successfully built a preschool with an extension for an office and a library. The library was intended to serve as an evening school for students of the secondary school located in the neighborhood. The facility is located approximately 15 km from the capital, Marsabit, in a remote village called Parkishon.
This project was implemented after the local communities of Rendille and Samburu, located in the area, highlighted the need for this facility. Previously, children under the age of six walked almost 4 km to school, they risked exposure to wild animals. The center is located in the village, closer to their Manyatta. The classroom will accommodate 40 children and the library will serve as a study center for about 120 local students.
After almost 90 percent of the work had been completed, unfortunately, donor funds ran out and construction halted. SAS YOU ASSIST came into contact with Martha Lalo Mule. She is an incredibly colorful person, now retired and living in Nairobi. Martha was the first woman from the area to go to school, and she went so far as to graduate from university. Martha is a driving force within FASAL. SAS YOU ASSIST decided to contribute the remaining amount, and by the end of 2021 the library construction was completed.
