St. Euphrasia's school is a Catholic school that was started back in 1972 by Sister Mary Alexandra. The school is located within St. Francis Xavier Convent, Colombo 15. Initially it was a vocational school for a small group of students. In 1989, a new building was added and two teachers, together with Sister Mary Alexandra, were appointed to conduct general school education at the primary level. The school is still run today by nuns with the help of several teachers.
Currently there are 20 students at the school who come from several areas of Colombo. Most of them are street children, and a few children have minor disabilities, such as hearing impairment and speech difficulties. The children are poor and sometimes have no proper housing. They also lack the means to buy uniforms for pay for education. Their parents do not take care of them so that they can develop in a good way.
SAS YOU ASSIST contributes to school materials, uniforms (mandatory in Sri Lanka), food and teachers' salaries, among other things. The students receive everything they need for their education. Students are prepared to enter schools of higher schools and training. They also get a cup of milk and a meal every day.
Once a year the students go on a school trip to see other parts of the country. The school usually celebrates the school day with a little party. There is also a preschool where mothers can leave their children during the day so they can work and help support the family.
