This project was started by the ECONIC EARTH Foundation and its founder, Nicole Watson. Together with local stakeholders and organisations, they distribute solar lamps to schools and students living in rural areas outside the national electricity network. This seemingly simple change in the children's lives, i.e. giving them access to LJUS, a lamp powered by solar energy, has the potential to change these children's lives. Firstly, it gives the children a better opportunity to do their homework when they get home, rather than relying on light from oil lamps or wood stoves. The lamps also have a security effect as the children can use the lamps when they walk home in the dark and thus scare away potential attackers. The lamps also provide families with an economic benefit as they need to spend less money on oil for their lamps. Last but not least, the project also has a positive health and environmental impact through reduced carbon dioxide emissions from kerosene lamps.
During 2024, lamps have been distributed in Kenya in several places, including in Fasal, Marsabit, where SAS YOU ASSIST has helped build a library. The plan for 2025 is to expand the project to Zambia and Cambodia, where we will be a co-sponsor.
